All Details at a Glance

Wastewater is used water that has been changed by domestic, industrial and commercial use. The composition of all wastewaters is constantly changing and highly variable, as such; it is difficult to pinpoint a singular definition.

Wastewater contains organic matter, microorganisms and inorganic compounds. Wastewater effluents may be released to a variety of environments, such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, estuaries and oceans. Wastewater also includes storm runoff, which may pick up harmful substances as water washes off roads, parking lots and rooftops.

The term “wastewater” is often used interchangeably with the term sewage. “Sewage” technically signifies any wastewaters which pass through a sewer. Before it enters a wastewater treatment plant, wastewater is sometimes called raw wastewater or raw sewage.

Domestic wastewater originates from restroom usage, bathing, food preparation, laundry etc. Commercial wastewater is derived from non-domestic sources, such as salons, mechanics, or car washes, for example. This wastewater may contain hazardous materials that require special treatment or disposal. Industrial wastewater originates from industrial or commercial manufacturing processes, including agriculture, and is usually more difficult to treat than domestic wastes. Industrial wastewater’s composition varies on an industry-by-industry basis.
