All Details at a Glance

Plant effluent is another way of referring to industrial wastewater. Industrial wastewater treatment describes the processes used for treating wastewater that is produced by industries as an undesirable by-product. After treatment, the treated industrial wastewater (or effluent) may be reused or released to a sanitary sewer or to surface water in the environment.

Some industrial facilities generate wastewater that can be treated in sewage treatment plants. Many industrial processes have their own specialized facilities to treat their wastewaters so that the pollutant concentrations in the treated wastewater comply with the regulations regarding disposal of wastewaters into sewers or into rivers, lakes or oceans.

Almost all industries produce at least some wastewater. Environmental sustainability initiatives require that industries minimize discharge of industrial wastewater in favor of recycling treated wastewater within the production process. Some industries have also been successful at redesigning their manufacturing processes to reduce or eliminate pollutants contained in wastewater streams.

Common sources of industrial wastewater include, but are not limited to; battery manufacturing, electric power plants, food industry, iron and steel industry, mines and quarries, nuclear industry, oil and gas extraction, organic chemicals manufacturing, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, pulp and paper industry, and textile mills. Reliable plant effluent filtration will save water and money in a variety of industrial water systems.
